WAWA'S
ATTRACTIONS
HISTORIC YOUNG'S GENERAL STORE
Step back in time and capture a northern memory by visiting
this unique gift and souvenir store with its antique
displays. Get your picture taken with a moose or fish
for a pickle in the barrel.
INUKSHUK (display next to Young's
General Store)
These
massive stone figures are built in the image of humans.
In the Arctic, the Inushuk are signposts marking the
easiest and fastest way for those who follow. They stand
as eternal symbols of the importance of friendship.
BADLANDS
Wawa's "Treeless Zone" is a
unique window for viewing the ice-age landscape of the
normally forested Canadian Shield. The Magpie River
flows along the western edge of the area and has eroded
a staircase of terraces with a total vertical relief
of 60 metres. This is a fabulous blueberry picking area
in the month of August. The road meanders through the
badlands and then follows an abandoned railway past
an open pit mining area that was operational in the
1960s. Beyond the open pit, the road ends behind Wawa
Lake, where it connects to Hwy.101, leading back to
the community of Wawa.
