WAWA'S
ATTRACTIONS
WAWA'S GOOSE MONUMENT
The Famous Wawa Goose is the largest of its kind in
Canada. It was erected in 1960 to commemorate the last
link of the Trans Canada highway. The original plaster
sculpture did not stand up to local weather and in 1963,
a new monument was constructed of steel. With Wawa meaning
"Wild Goose" in Ojibway, it makes perfect
sense to have a goose welcoming visitors at the entrance
of town. It is located at the junction of Highway 17
and Hwy. 101.
MINING MONUMENT & HERITAGE
WALK
The
mining of gold and iron ore once fueled Wawa's economy.
The large orange Rotary Blasthole Drill is Wawa's monument
to an industry that shaped our economy for many years.
It is the starting point of a beautiful walk along the
shores of Wawa Lake in downtown Wawa. The walk passes
several interpretive kiosks telling the story of Wawa's
early gold rush days and the iron ore mining that was
Wawa's mainstay industry until 1998.
